POSITION SUMMARY: Portland Opera seeks an Associate Director of Marketing and Audience Development to join its newly created External Affairs Department. A key team member, the new Associate Director must be a high-energy individual with successful experience leading ticket sales in a deadline oriented industry. The Associate Director will be responsible for all aspects of planning, implementing, measuring and evaluating the marketing, communications, publications, and sales efforts in support of Portland Opera productions and events.
In collaboration with the Director of External Affairs and the senior management team, the Associate Director will develop long-term market strategies, including Portland Opera’s brand identity. Among the core scope of responsibilities is the management of season campaign programs, day-to-day marketing and communications activities as well as inbound and outbound Opera sales operations.
The Associate Director supervises the Opera Marketing and Digital Manager, the Opera Sales and Patron Experiences Manager, and the Opera Marketing Coordinator. In addition, the Associate Director will work closely with the Associate Director of Development and Communications, the Director of Broadway Marketing & Sales and the Graphic Designer.
As part of the External Affairs Department, the Associate Director interacts with other department members to insure important coordination and success of all efforts to enhance the growth of patrons and company revenue.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop vision for Portland Opera’s marketing and sales efforts that communicates the character, ideals, and mission of the organization to a wide range of patrons, donors, employees, and other stakeholders.
Create and implement audience development marketing plans, including research on target audiences, market trends, and performing arts/non-profit trends using focus groups, surveys and industry data.
Provide consistent and clear leadership to the marketing, sales and communication team.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with the development team to ensure the coordination and success of all Portland Opera revenue efforts.
Inspire the team with passion, respect, and an openness to new ideas and approaches.
Work with the Director of External Affairs and other members of the External Affairs department to develop and execute a comprehensive media communications plan that enhances brand awareness of the institution and its many activities and productions in particular.
Participate in professional development activities (i.e., conferences, professional groups, seminars, courses, etc.) to ensure that new ideas and methods are introduced to Portland Opera on an ongoing basis.
Establish and maintain company-wide standards for written and graphic communications in printed, verbal, or electronic forms.
Build and cultivate collaborative relationships with industry leaders, board members, media, government and city officials, key business partners, promotional partners, performing arts organizations, and community leaders.
Season Planning and Execution
Create of season timeline and calendars in consultation with team managers and other department directors.
Develop and execute of comprehensive marketing, communications, advertising, and promotional plans for Opera subscription campaigns and single ticket sales.
Oversee the development of all collateral marketing in support of all Opera productions and public events.
Establish ticket sales goals by production and ticket type during budgeting process and forecast sales on at least a monthly basis in coordination with team managers.
Provide institution with comprehensive weekly sales reports.
Develop and manage departmental expense budgets.
Work collaboratively with all departments to provide marketing materials and support for fundraising, education, and community engagement activities.
Provide the Director of External Affairs with ongoing measurements, including all pertinent analytics and campaign metrics, to ensure appropriate ROI and the effectiveness and efficiency of all marketing campaigns.
Oversee ongoing measurements of communications efforts, including open and click- through rates of all emails, as well as general digital tracking.
Oversee inventory management and dynamic pricing strategies to maximize revenue.
Oversee company website, including content, design, maintenance, e-commerce and promotion.
Oversee management and coordination of outside consultants and vendors.
Negotiate contracts with vendors for advertising, printing, ticketing and other support services.
Oversee social media campaigns, including Facebook, Twitter, company blog and email communication.
Manage Portland Opera publications including Opera Buzz, annual reports, program books, web site and other communications vehicles.
Oversee a robust patron services effort that engages Opera patrons, bonds them more deeply to the institution, and encourages their growth and loyalty to Portland Opera.
Oversee response to customer/patron complaints and expedite the resolution of customer service issues in coordination with Opera Sales and Patron Experiences Manager.
5 to 10 years of experience in marketing, sales, and/or public relations fields.
5+ years in related marketing and ticket sales staff management position.
Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and guide a team of diverse marketing and sales professionals in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented atmosphere.
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with operatic repertoire and the entertainment industry.
Working knowledge of HR fundamentals related to workgroup management.
Solid business computer experience and skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and patron database systems.
Working knowledge of design and printing principles.
Working knowledge of Ticketmaster and database management.
