Our Marketing & Communications department at CMU is seeking a dynamic, senior full-stack developer (HTML/CSS/JS, PHP, MySQL) with a passion for solving the challenges of content management in an agile, user-centered context.
This is a 18 month, fixed term appointment with full time benefits.
Your primary role of this position, as part of the University's Online Strategy team and reporting to the Associate Director of Online Strategy, is to help architect and implement a world-class, enterprise-scale content management platform using innovative, open-source technologies.
Your primary duties and responsibilities include:
Participating directly in the concept, design, development, testing, and deployment of a novel, innovative content management platform-as-a-service, which will power the University's web presence now and in the future
Mastering existing open-source technologies, significantly extending them, and contributing novel code to create a stable, scalable CMS ecosystem which allows non-technical users to develop, deploy and maintain new websites quickly and easily, and with advanced functionality
Providing input on every aspect of developer operations, from determining local dev environments, to infrastructure design, to QA and deployment planning
Exploring advanced concepts including accessibility, natural language processing, data production/consumption, API development, decoupled/headless architecture, containerization, and more in a practical, enterprise context with compelling use cases and constraints.

Extensive experience working with CMS platforms, especially Drupal 7/8, and/or other common open-source solutions (Wordpress, Backdrop, Joomla, etc.). A passion for content management is a requirement; commits to any major open source CMS platform, past presentations at CMS conferences, and/or exposure to headless/decoupled CMS models will be a huge plus.
Exceptionally strong, demonstrable hands-on ability with front-end technologies (HTML/CSS, JS, Node, React) and methodologies (BEM, SMACSS). We want to see your GitHub/Codepen/website!
Strong PHP skills, especially using frameworks (Symfony)
Deep understanding of web-services, especially JSON
Some experience with MySQL/MariaDB
Comfort working in an agile development environment
Experience using version control (Git, Gitlab)
Experience with all aspects of the QA/test cycle (unit, integration, regression, user acceptance); continuous integration and/or test-driven development experience is a plus
Ability to write clean, compliant, reusable code and willingness to adhere to coding standards
Experience working in an enterprise setting and/or with a CMS platform as a service, where many different users are building, launching and maintaining many different types of websites.
Exceptional communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Experience :
Experience with package management (Composer)
API design/development experience
Experience with developing for accessibility, and accessibility standards and testing
Exposure to basic LAMP stack server administration tasks, cache layers (Redis, Memcached, Varnish, Squid), containerization (Docker), VMs
Knowledge of other object oriented programming languages
At least 5-8 years of web development experience with increasing responsibility
Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science or related field preferred
Works independently and effectively, and manages multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
A high level of integrity, trustworthiness, respect and team collaboration
